Welcome

On a cold winternight, about 50 years ago, Barend Vieveen, besides being carpenter at the University of Technology Delft, also a great player of the violin and cymbalon, rode his bike home. On the street he noticed a broken wheel and when he looked down the slope, he saw a sleeping young student, J. Ankersmit. He had decided to snooze off under the starry sky and used his violin-coffer as a blanket on his chest. Bringing the young man home, Barend Vieveen fell into talk with him and soon the Pipacs was a lively orchestra. During twenty years Barend Vieveen was a steady hand in the Pipacs, hence the nickname "Bárend Bácsi Banda", the band of Uncle Barend.

During its excistence the Pipacs has constantly renewed the band members. The artistic level however remains at the same high standard through frequent contacts with professional Gypsy musicians like Gregor Serban, Sandor "Buffo" Rigo and Tata Mirando. Every week the filling rehearses to keep the rhythm tight and the violin solo true. The repertoire varies from fast Rumanian and Yiddish to drawling Hongarian doinas. A night of music and fun prepares the orchestra for the next performance.

Recently the Pipacs recorded in collaboration with Edo Santman and Matthijs Minderman a new album at the Museum of Technology in Delft. The edited CD is a great success: Not only the music, but also the enthousiasm of the band has been captured. On this site you can find tracks of this and the former album, as well as video clips of our performance on Hungarian national television.

Over 40 performances by Pipacs a year!
